About Dragonfly Daycare

Welcome to Dragonfly Daycare!

I am so excited to welcome you and your family to Dragonfly Daycare.  I will commit myself to helping your child(ren) learn and grow based on their individual needs and styles.  I am a Registered Family Daycare Provider through the state of Oregon.  This means that I have completed all required classes including Infant and Child CPR and Basic First Aid.  I am a certified Step 9.5 with The Oregon Center for Career Development in Childhood Care and Education.  I am committed to keeping up to date with research involving children and their families and am always continuing and expanding my own knowledge and education to better serve the children in my care.

License Capacity:  I am allowed to care for a total of 10 children under 13 years old at any given time, including my own.  Only 6 children in my care at once can be under the age of 6, and only 2 of them can be under the age of 2.

Non-Discrimination:  I shall not discriminate against children and their families on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.

As a childcare provider I am a mandatory reporter.  I am required by law to report any signs of suspected child abuse and/or neglect to the appropriate law enforcement agency or Child Abuse Hotline.

My Philosophy of Care

I believe that each child is unique and beautiful.

I believe that all children deserve a safe and loving environment that will accommodate

          their learning styles and needs.

I believe every child’s individual abilities and skills should be celebrated and nurtured.

I believe that all children deserve to have their emotions and ideas heard, understood

         and acknowledged.

I believe that all children should be treated with respect and love.

I believe that children learn and grow through imaginative play as well as structured

          learning activities.

What I, as a Provider, expect from Parents

·         Communication:  Above all else, I believe open communication is important in everyone’s comfort and success.  I ask that parents communicate to me what they expect from me and my care of their child(ren).  If there are any issues what so ever, I ask for parents to please talk to me first and ask questions before jumping to any conclusions, and I will agree to do the same.  If there is any specific item parents would like their child(ren) to be working on, please talk with me and we can come up with a plan together based on the child(ren).

·         Trust:  As a parent myself, I understand how scary our world can be and that parents, unfortunately, have to be overly conscious in order to ensure their child(ren)’s safety.  However, by placing a child in my care, the parent is saying that they trust that I will care for their child(ren)’s needs.  I ask that parents please treat me in a manner that shows this.

Misc. Information and Conditions

Celebrated Holidays/Children Birthdays

Dragonfly Daycare honors major holidays, including (but not limited to) Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the 4th of July as well as children’s birthdays.  Crafts and activities will include holiday themes.  If there is a specific holiday a family celebrates, I would be more than happy to include it into our curriculum.

Program and Activities

I encourage creative hands on play, both indoors and outdoors.  I provide learning activities based on a weekly letter of the alphabet.  These learning activities will include recognizing and writing letters, the sounds they make, recognizing and writing numbers, as well as puzzles, coloring activities, crafts, science and other hands on activities.  I strive to develop a love of learning and creativity within the child that will last their lifetime.  Although I assist children with hands on activities when needed, I encourage them to complete as much as they are able to themselves, even if that means the activities do not turn out exactly as I had planned.  During free-choice play children will have various age appropriate activities to choose from, including dress-up, building blocks, building train tracks, cars/trucks, kitchen/practical life area, dolls and stuffed animals, books, coloring and/or drawing, board and card games, outdoor playhouse, outdoor truck area, and much more.  I will also incorporate story reading times and music appreciation.  When a child is interested in a specific subject, I will do my best to find activities related to that subject.

I have a basic daily schedule, although it is subject to change based on many variables.  I will follow this basic schedule during all days I am open, including Saturdays and school vacations.

Basic Daily Schedule

8:30 AM         Open Play (Indoor/Outdoor)
9:30 AM         Snack
10:00 AM       Learning Activities
11:30 AM       Lunch
12:00  PM      Organized Play (Reading, board game, ect.)
12:30PM        Quiet Time
2:00 PM         Snack
2:30 PM         Craft/Science/Other Project
3:30 PM        Open play (Indoor/Outdoor) until going home

Electronics

I allow limited television and screen time depending on the age and development of the child.

Arrival and Departure

I will not release a child to anyone other than the parents/guardians, unless indicated on the alternate pickup list, without written permission from the parent.  Any adult that I do not recognize will be asked to provide proof of identification before I will release the child to them.  Parents are in charge of their child during drop-off and pick-up times.  Parents are free to visit with their child during this time to help them transition.  I will assume responsibility for the child when the parents leave.  I ask that parents acknowledge me and that I see them and know their child is present before parents leave.  (Please do not simple drive up and tell your child to run to my door.)

Meals

I am enrolled in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).  Through this program I will provide two nutritious snacks for the children, both in the morning and the afternoon, as well as lunch which will all be based on USDA nutrition guidelines.  For infants I will supply an USDA approved formula, as well as infant food.  Once a child turns one, I will offer whole milk, 2% or 1% based on the parent’s wishes.  I will need each parent fill out an enrollment form for the program.  If you would like more information on the program you can visit www.fns.usda.gov and click on Child Nutrition.

Guidance Policy

Children are little people who are trying to understand the world around them.  I believe in re-direction and re-enforcing positive behaviors in order to discourage inappropriate ones.  I will model appropriate behaviors and problem-solving. I believe children (depending on their development) should be first given the chance to work through any issues and/or difficulties.  I will become involved when a situation is obviously frustrating, confusing, and/or hurting in any way to a child.  As long as it is safe to do so, I will speak with the child at his/her level about the behavior that needs guidance.  I believe in helping children understand what behavior and/or action was unacceptable in a loving manner.  I will discuss with the child and explain the reasoning behind why their behavior and/or action was unacceptable in order for them to better understand why to not repeat it in the future.  If needed, the child will be removed from the group in order for them to take time for themselves to reflect and calm down before rejoining the group.  A child will be immediately removed from the situation if there is any indication or threat of physically hurting another child.

I realize there are many reasons a child may become irritable and upset more easily, many of the same reasons that I, as an adult, can; interruptions in their usual schedule, a new and different environment, being tired, hungry or simply not feeling their best.  Although these do not excuse inappropriate behavior and actions, it is important to remember the causes behind some behavior, especially with younger children who may not understand why they are feeling grumpy and/or upset.

No corporal punishment will be used.  No child shall be physically punished in any way.  No child shall be shamed, frightened or humiliated.  No verbal abuse, threats or derogatory remarks will be used.

Supplies provided by Parents/Guardians

Parents will need to send at least one change of clothing with each child, two changes of clothing for children younger than 2 years of age.  Please also supply a water bottle.  I like to always have a water bottle accessible for the children, and I have noticed this goes more smoothly when each child has their own that they brought from home.  Monthly families may leave the change of clothing at Dragonfly Daycare, otherwise please pack them a bag.  All items belonging to a child should have his/her name or initials written on them.

Parents of infants and non-potty trained toddlers, will send all diapers, wipes and creams needed for their child.  As part of the CACFP I am required to offer an approved formula, however you are welcome to provide your own or expressed breast milk.  I am a big supporter of breastfeeding as long as mother and child are able to do so, please do not hesitate to ask for any specific assistance related to this, for example if a mother works close by and is able to stop by on her breaks to breastfeed.

Besides security items, please leave all toy items at home.  If there is a specific item (such as a new birthday gift) that a child would like to share, they may bring it to share, but I ask that parents explain to them that it will not be out and played with all day.  We will only bring it out at a specific time in order for them to share with their friends.

Immunizations

A complete immunization record must be on file prior to a child’s first day at Dragonfly Daycare.

Pets in the Home

Dragonfly Daycare has a Golden Retriever named Doggie.  She has been certified as healthy by a veterinarian and has all her current immunizations, as required by the state of Oregon.
